Skiing in the Area

Short distances, family-friendly slopes and cross-country trails right at the door of the holiday house: in winter, Oberammergau isn't just a backdrop of snow-covered timber-frame gables, it's also a base for a surprisingly diverse range of winter sports, from a child's first turns on skis to Germany's steepest slope, all just a few kilometres apart. In summer, incidentally, the very same paths turn into ideal hiking routes.

Kolbensattel: The Family Ski Resort Right at the Door

Just around 2.6 kilometres from the village centre lies the Kolbensattel, Oberammergau's local ski resort. According to skiresort.de, it's one of the most family-friendly ski areas in the region: around 90 percent of its slopes are blue, and the practice lifts are all in the valley area, ideal for ski schools, beginners, and families with small children who don't need to be hauled up the mountain first.

At 1,270 metres, the Kolbensattelhütte invites you to catch your breath with regional cuisine and a large panoramic terrace, indoors when it's snowing, outdoors in the sun. Those after more action will find the small Snowpark Oberammergau near the base station, for freeskiers and snowboarders.

Good to know: the parking fee at the resort's car park is usually included in the lift ticket price, a detail that often costs extra at larger ski areas.

For Advanced Skiers: The Nordhang on the Laber

Those looking for more of a challenge won't find it at the Kolbensattel but at the neighbouring Laber: its "Nordhang" ski route is among the steepest slopes in Germany, reserved exclusively for experienced skiers. The contrast between the gentle Kolbensattel and the demanding Laber Nordhang makes the region interesting for mixed travel groups: while some relax and practise their first turns, others can let loose on the steep slope, both in the same destination, with no long drive between the two areas.

Cross-Country: One of the Region's Most Generous Trail Networks

The elevation and the wide Ammer valley make Oberammergau a genuine cross-country skiing paradise. Maintained by the Ammergauer Alpen Nature Park association, an extensive, free network of cross-country trails spreads through the surrounding mountains around Oberammergau: flat enough for beginners, extensive enough to keep experienced skiers busy for several hours. Since the trails connect directly to the village, a morning on skis can easily be combined with a stroll around the village or a warm meal.

Not Just for Skiers: Alpine Coaster and Children's Playground

Even non-skiers get their money's worth at the Kolbensattel. The AlpinCoaster races roughly 2.5 kilometres down into the valley from the Kolbensattelhütte, a highlight for children and teenagers that also runs during the winter season. Within sight of the hut is also a large mountain adventure playground, ideal for keeping younger siblings busy while the rest of the family takes another run.

Practical Tips for Your Ski Day

Ski rental: right at the Kolbensattel base station there's a ski rental shop, so your own equipment isn't needed if you're only skiing for a few days.

Refreshments: besides the Kolbensattelhütte, the ski area offers further options for a stop, plus an umbrella bar at the base station for an après-ski mood in the afternoon.

For the very youngest beginners: the separate Wank lifts offer a small, quieter practice area especially for children and first-timers, with artificial snowmaking for reliable conditions.

Current piste and trail conditions: since snow conditions and open facilities can change from week to week, it's worth checking the daily snow report before you travel.
