Oberammergau lies in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in the Ammer valley on the river Ammer, at 837 metres above sea level. The village is world-famous above all for its Passion Play, staged every ten years — the next performance takes place in 2030.
Also defining the village are its resident woodcarvers ("Herrgottsschnitzer") and the many houses decorated with elaborate façade painting ("Lüftlmalerei") — among them the Pilatushaus, the Forsthaus and the Mußldomahaus.
The village is reachable by train, though arriving by car is more convenient.
Hiking, mountain biking, swimming in Lake Plansee or Lake Bayersoien, day trips to Linderhof Palace and Ettal Abbey.
Skiing and cross-country skiing, gentle winter walks and sledging — all right at the door.
